A Tale of the Middle Brother

Adam is the oldest of three brothers. They are very close and when the three of them are together, it really is the best of times. But in honor of Scott’s birthday – Adam’s middle brother – this blog post is dedicated to him.

Now Adam and Scott are practically the same person. I mean, we all agree Adam is still crazier, but they look alike, sound alike, went to college together, and now live in the same town. So they are together ALL the time and Scott is always up for Adam’s crazy shenanigans. They are quite the brotherly duo. Here are some of the more recent stories…

One that still haunts us to this day is the shopping disaster that ensued a few years ago. My sister-in-law brought Scott for a comprehensive shopping trip to the mall to essentially get a brand new wardrobe. Turns out, Adam was also in need of a new wardrobe, but HATES shopping. So Scott had the “best” idea – since he had just gone through the pain of shopping himself, he would take Adam back to the exact same stores to get the exact same clothes – that way it would be quick and painless and they could get back to doing what they love most: just hanging out at the house. To Adam, that was a perfect idea! So that’s exactly what they did.

Adam came back with an entire wardrobe filled with the EXACT same clothes his brother had just purchased. Now, for brothers who live in different areas or only see one another every once and awhile, that would be fine. But they literally see each other constantly. I have lost count of the amount of times they have shown up places wearing the same. exact. outfit. But let’s just say it happens a lot…

(A random Tuesday last week)

It’s been especially rough when they show up in the same button down shirt on a Saturday night out.

They are VERY big into challenges, as I imagine many siblings are. But it goes beyond the basic ‘whose calves are bigger’ competitions:

That’s just child’s play.

It’s morphed into playground challenges that happen in broad daylight, usually with a line of kids patiently waiting their turn.

Honestly, this one is too mortifying to even share the details on:

But my personal favorite, the mall dance challenge for a free cup of coffee:

Never been prouder.

Then there was the knife-throwing incident. Not a competition, but one with quite an interesting backstory…

A few weeks ago at dinner, Adam said on a whim, he decided to buy an elaborate metal detector – you know, so the girls could go hunting for treasure together at the beach this summer. Okay…now first of all, we don’t go to the beach all that often, and that just seemed like a random thing to schlep along with our chairs and towels for our 3 & 1/2 year old to try to navigate using. But he said his grandma used to do that with them as kids, and that memory really holds a special place in his heart…why am I trying to crush his dreams?! Okay fine. I went along with it, and I’m sure that $100 will pay for itself with all the treasure they find through the years.

About a week later, he looks over to me in bed and says: “Remember that whole metal detector thing? Well it really was for something else.” (Shocking)

As a gift earlier this year, Scott had bought Adam a set of throwing knives (to which I’m pretty sure I responded at the time: “Seriously???”). Well on a random afternoon, the guys decided to test them out…in our backyard…next to the playground. Don’t worry – no kids were present. Here’s a little taste of how that scene went down for your viewing pleasure:

And then they lost one of the knives.

Like completely. Searched for over two hours and could not find it ANYWHERE.

Enter the metal detector.

And viola! It is now safe to send your kids to play on our swing-set once again.

And of course, there was the blueberry pie incident of 2015.

But for those of you who don’t know it, that’s a story for another time.
